Speed Up XP Computers Using Regular Maintenance Tasks

There are still a great many people using Windows XP thanks to it being secure and faster than Vista. However, running the operating system (OS) on old PCs can become a bit of a strain. This article shows how to speed up XP using freely available methods.

Let's start with boot performance. As Windows XP is starting it initializes programs and services on your PC, many of which you possibly don't need running. Use the startup tab on the System Configuration utility (Start menu > Run > enter msconfig) to enable/disable programs. Just be certain you understand what the applications you disable are doing and do not alter anti-virus services.

How your applications and OS are running should be the next concern - you want to ensure these programs are running as efficiently as possible. To do this, open the task manager program and analyze running programs.

Close those applications you no longer need. Any tools using a lot of memory (see the processes tab) should be checked online for performance issues, patch updates or work-around option (on user forums).

Finally run an anti-virus scan and Windows update. This will help speed up XP by ensuring no buggy could is hampering your OS and that your device drivers/system files are as current as possible.

Next, turn your attention to the effectiveness of principal hardware usage. Empty out at least 10% free space on your hard drives. Windows needs this space for virtual memory. Next double check the virtual memory configuration (system > advanced > performance options > page file). You want to ensure the maximum page file size is greater than the recommended setting. Finally, run the disk defragmenter tool on all drives to speed up XP disk access performance.

These pointers should help speed up XP on an ongoing basis. The addition/upgrade of system RAM will also provide that extra PC boost your XP machine could need.

USB Flash Security Options

It is increasingly common to hear of someone in the news losing customer information on a company laptop or memory stick. This article looks at hardware and software options for USB flash security that firms and individuals should be considering.

USB drives are great for their portability and ability to store huge volumes of data that would have previously gone on hundreds of floppy disks. Securing this data without impeding the portability of the information is crucial to protecting the financial information, source code, employee data and other information that these USB drives invariably carry.

Securing USB data can be done using a software or hardware approach.

The software approach involves installing an application (e.g. FreeOTFE or TrueCrypt) on the drive that encrypts information as it is being stored. The data is only as secure as the algorithm that the software makers use combined with the complexity of the password used. If the device is lost then hackers may be able to read the memory and the data but it should be near impossible to decipher.

The more costly approach to USB flash security is to use hardware encryption in specially designed USB drives. Hardware encryption is widely used to fix computer security issues by transparently encrypting data as it is being stored to memory. Users can provide and additional password that is used with the hardware's own encryption.

Note that if the password is lost in either option then the data cannot be recovered. The hardware approach protects companies from using weak passwords, but software that uses strong cryptography algorithms should still provide a high level of security even in the case of weak passwords being used.

Employees should follow the USB flash security policy of their firm, which may actually preclude the use of USB sticks, and home users should make password protecting USB data as important as backing up the drives contents.

Tape Backup Software and Systems – Why Administrators Still Choose to Use Them

In this technological age of advanced HDD storage systems it is still surprising to see backup tapes in use by companies. This article takes a look at why tape backup software and autoloaders are still as popular as ever.

Backup tapes were one of the forerunners in backup technology and have been successfully maintaining duplicate copies of many companies IT systems for decades. In a sense, this explains their ongoing success. They have already proven themselves to be reliable and capable to change as each new operating system comes along.

In comparison, Vista initially had problems being restored from HDD devices but this was never the case with tape backup. It worked from day one.

The maturity of the system also means that tape costs are extremely low (lots of competition) and this in turn keeps costs down and encourages the liberal production of numerous copies for onsite backups and offsite tape storage. It also simplifies the process of maintaining versions/generations of IT systems.

And while tape backup software and autoloaders are still a lot slower than HDD and other newer systems, this is less of a concern for administrators as the process is always automated to a great extent.

One additional consideration has always been data recovery. In the event of your backup copies being damaged you will want to recover the data as promptly and, preferably, as cheaply as possible.

In a disk to disk backup system if you try to restore data from a faulty drive then you will need to call in data recovery experts in order to salvage your data. This is often at a considerable cost, especially if a mechanical recovery is necessary. In comparison, if a tape backup is dropped and damaged you can simply swap the cartridge with a fresh one and your tape backup software will probably be able to read the contents immediately.

It remained touch and go for quite some time as Google made room for new users. At one time Google released special codes through a lottery to allow new users into the madly popular system.

Google Analytics is an extremely popular website analytics program due to its ease of use and its great price tag (free). While there are a few terms of service you must agree to in order to use the system (such as not tracking personally identifiable information, among others) the terms are easy for most website owners to comply with. Cascading Style Sheets and Email Display

Designing the HTML version of your email message can be difficult since there are so many different email client and operating system combinations out there - and they have their own way of rendering HTML. And there really is no way to be positively sure which client your readers will be using to view your messages. 

If your reader has a Hotmail address, it's generally safe to assume that he will be reading your message through the Hotmail web client. But what about your readers with private email addresses? Will they be using Microsoft Outlook? Will it be Outlook 2000, Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007? Or maybe he's using Lotus Notes? What if he had his TLD email forwarded to a Yahoo account? And is he using a Mac or a PC? 

Since you don't really know the answers to any of these questions, when designing your email campaigns it's important that you always design for the most accessibility. 

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) offers the ability to make your email messages extremely graphic and enticing. Unfortunately, there is still limited support of r CSS with many email clients and across various platforms. One of the biggest CSS-offenders is Outlook 2007; and since studies show that up to 75% of email readers use Outlook, you just can't ignore its rendering flaws. 

Unfortunately, Outlook 2007 has no support for floating elements, which is widely used in CSS for positioning objects. So it's based to use a table-based layout when designing your email campaigns. Think web design circa the year 2000. If you're a new designer and have never dealt with tables before, you can get tons of how-to information from the W3C. 

While Outlook 2007 does support the property, I don't recommend that you use it to attach your style sheet. At least 50% of your readers will have their images turned off, which means any linked elements will not be linked - and this includes your external style sheet. Besides, Gmail, Live Mail and Hotmail don't support linked elements, so it's a good idea not to use them anyway. Instead, define all of your styles within your message and never rely on an external style sheet for your email messages. 

Where, within the message, you should define your styles is another story altogether. Live Mail looks for the style sheet with the , Hotmail looks for the style sheet right below the tag. Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007, AOL, Yahoo, Entourage and Thunderbird will accept either placement, but Gmail doesn't accept any of them. 

The best option is to use in-line style tags. In-line style simply means that the style for each element must be defined individually. Instead of defining your style sheet within your head like this:<link rel="STYLESHEET" type="text/css" href="http://www.mysite.com/style.css" mce_href="http://www.mysite.com/style.css"> 

or even something like this:<mce:style type="text/css" media="screen"><!-- p {"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />georgia, serif; font-size: x-small;} hr {color: #ff9900; height: 1px } a:hover {color: #ff0000; text-decoration: none} --></mce:style><style type="text/css" media="screen" mce_bogus="1"><!-- p {"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />georgia, serif; font-size: x-small;} hr {color: #ff9900; height: 1px } a:hover {color: #ff0000; text-decoration: none} --></style> 

you would define each element individually, like this:

When you're defining those elements, keep in mind that not all CSS properties are supported across the board on all email clients. If you want to present a consistent message to all of your readers no matter how they are reading your mail, limit yourself to these CSS properties:

And now for even more bad news: Lotus Notes and Eudora have terrible CSS support and even many of the widely-accepted CSS properties may not render properly. And since more and more readers are now accessing email on PDAs and other handheld devices, you can never be 100% certain how or where your message will be read. So I suggest you always use Multipart-Mime messaging, and always include a link to your text version within the html version of your message.

How Do I Open an ODT File?

An ODT file also called the Open Document Text file is an XML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) based file system used for processing electronic office applications like presentations, spreadsheets, word processing documents etc. Even though the concept of open document text files was originally developed by Sun, it was later developed and marketed by the technical committee of the Open Office XML Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). People now have been customized to using the XML based text format developed by Microsoft called the doc file. It comes out as an excellent alternative for those people who want to break away from the Microsoft legacy.

Since the launch of this open source XML based file format many people have now started using it because of the benefits it offers over the other used format. Now the question comes to your mind as to how do I open an ODT file. The answer can be found in the following steps:
