Dennis Moore Hopkins

An ODT file also called the Open Document Text file is an XML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) based file system used for processing electronic office applications like presentations, spreadsheets, word processing documents etc. Even though the concept of open document text files was originally developed by Sun, it was later developed and marketed by the technical committee of the Open Office XML Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). People now have been customized to using the XML based text format developed by Microsoft called the doc file. It comes out as an excellent alternative for those people who want to break away from the Microsoft legacy.

Since the launch of this open source XML based file format many people have now started using it because of the benefits it offers over the other used format. Now the question comes to your mind as to how do I open an ODT file. The answer can be found in the following steps:

With more and more people using ODT files for managing their office documents open programs experts have come up with new and innovative way of handling files.

• One of the best and most used ways of opening ODT files is through Microsoft Word itself. Although Word is not designed to handle under normal circumstances but it can be forcefully made to accept and open ODT files by installing an add-on package. Even though there are lots of such additional patches available on the internet, but one that is widely used and can be trusted is the Open XML/ODF translator. After installing this package into your work processor it will help word to open ODT files just like it opens doc files.
• Another way of opening files is by installing office software that specializes in handling ODT type applications. One of the most prominent such software is the StarOffice suite which comes with an inbuilt program called the writer. The writer is in many ways similar to the Microsoft Word of the Microsoft Office suite.
• IBM recently launched a program called Lotus Notes which has proven to be very efficient in opening and editing these files.
• Another latest revolution in the field of open source documents is the advent of Google docs. This program has enabled the online viewing of documents easier than ever. One can easily open documents of any format in Google docs including ODT files.
