"Without technical mumbo jumbo, what is the blue screen of death?"
Since Microsoft Windows was unleashed on the world it has always had it's dark side, the dreaded BSOD (or blue screen of death).
To many, this is simply an annoyance, to others it is the cause of...
- Data loss
- Hardware failure
- Increased stress
In it's most simplistic terms, a blue screen of death only occurs on a Microsoft Windows operating system if the kernerl has no where else to turn, no tricks left up it's sleeve to recover from the error that caused it in the first place. All the poor operating system can do in it's final breath is wave the white flag and plaster a lovely blue background with all sorts of meaningless text and numbers on the screen.
This in turn is then "read" by the computers user and one of two things will happen;
- You sign loudly and thank your lucky stars that you weren't actually doing anything productive at the time or...
- You generate a rather loud scream, start yelling at the computer for being utterly useless as you have just lost hours of work, or you were in the middle of a game that was so intense you just came back down to earth with a tremendous bang.
No it's not fair when it happens, but there's not a lot you can do about it when it does happen. That my friends is part of the joy of using a Microsoft Windows based operating system. As versions of Microsoft Windows improve, so does the frequency of this problem happening but the main reasons for this irritating event are;
- Hardware problem - One of the rarer reasons, but if part of your setup isn't quite working correctly, it can generate the problem. This can be anything from a CPU that is on the way out to a hard drive spinning it's last cycles before becoming defunct. This type of blue screen culprit is thankfully becoming a thing of the past due to better quality hardware components being available in todays market.
- Software problem - More common scenario than the above. An incorrectly configured program, a corrupt system file, an incompatible program or software driver can cause the blue screen of death to rear it's ugly head. The best solution here is to make sure that all the software you use is completely compatible with your operating system. Also ensure that you keep all your software up to date with the latest fixes, patches and service packs and hopefully you will drastically minimize this type of blue screen of death.
The name of the game is proactive prevention. Take care of your PC and associated hardware, and ensure your software is kept up to date and free of errors and this will help in the battle of the blue screen of death.
